In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981,100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won't see this data on the U.S. evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adver sely a ffect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!

Where I live, home invasions are very popular, especially in the daytime. When perfect strangers start pounding on your door, you look out the window, and it's a couple of punks, saying they have a package for you. Through the window I told them to go away, I wasn't interested. After a number of times this happening, I knew I had to do something. Here in my state you can get 5 to 15 for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. I decided it was in my best interest to take the appropriate classes, and get the license/permit, to protect my a**, and my family, on so many levels. What's interesting, is that once you get a permit, one realizes the serious responsbilities that go along with that. Folks with permits know exactly what I am talking about. I am s-o-o-o against gun control. I'll do what I need to do, to protect my loved ones.

A: Route determination is responsible for carrying frames between adjacent nodes. Frames is packets of data and the route determines which node the data is sent and retrieved to/from.

B: Flow control includes error correction and retransmission as needed.

C: Interface to transmission media is mechanical, electrical and functional interfaces.

D and E are a bit confusing, because they fit together with all of the others at one point or another. I put them together at the top, only because they both do the same thing, theoretically speaking.

All of the others provides access for the end user *and* communicates directly with user's applications and programs.

If even one of the others fails, then access to the end user and communication for programs and applications fails. This must be a trick question. lol

How to re-set P.C back in time to recover lost files?

Hi...I was using an interfaced program. I made some changes re-setting it back to default options as the manual changes I made seemed to have made it run too slow. On re-start for the changes to take effect, I have lost a huge amount of data. IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN RE-SET MY P.C TO SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE SO I CAN GET MY DATA BACK?

How to re-set P.C back in time to recover lost files?
Using system restore will not bring your files back. It only resets the operating system files and settings back to where they were at a given "restore point".

If all you did is change a program back to its default settings (I have no idea what an interfaced program is) it shouldn't have deleted any of your data.

What may have happened is the folder you saved your data to originally is not the "default" folder for the application, so when you try to open a file it is not in the "default" folder. But it should still be in the original location you saved it to.

Do this: Open Windows Explorer and go to My Computer. Now click on the Search button at the top of the window and select "All Files and Folders".

Enter the name of a file you can no longer find in the first box on the left (a partial name will do). Also, make sure that "Search Subfolders" is checked in Advanced Options. Click on the Search button at the bottom and let the computer look for your file. If it finds it, the rest of your stuff should be there as well.

If it doesn't you data is probably gone and about the only thing you could do then is use a third-party program like Get Data Back to look on the hard drive for the erased files.

In microsoft visual c++ , how can i hide private members of a class in a static link library?

i wrote a static link library in two files : code.cpp and header.h , header.h includes the interface of a class named Class1 , which have private members and public members , and code.cpp includes the implementation of that class , i dont want the programmer who uses the static link library to see the private members decleration of the class (Class1) , if i give header.h to the programmer he will know the declaration of the private members , and if i exclude the private members of his copy of header.h , it class (Class1) will not work.

One way to do it is to make Class1 call some other class for all actual implementation. So you make a new class, Class1Impl, which does all the real work. Class1 has a pointer to Class1Impl, and all of the member functions of Class1 call the appropriate member function of Class1Impl. You don't need to give out the header for Class1Impl as it can just be predeclared at the top of the Class1 declaration.

I want to replace my C:drive with a bigger one, without starting over...?

Although i do not want to reinstall all my apps, etc. Can i plug my new drive into my computer (via external usb hd interface), cut and paste all the data over to the new drive. Then pull out my old one and replace it with the drive i just copied all my data onto? I have a feeling this won't work.

Reply:What you described will not work. Once you install Windows on the new drive you will need to re-install all the applications you have on the old disk, because all applications write files into the registry and maybe into the Windows folder. These files will have to be placed there via the installer and not by just dragging files into location.

What I suggest is you add a large drive with a USB connection, move your data to the new drive if you have data on the old drive and leave the old drive for OS and applications only. I am not sure if you use Outlook for email which tends to store the email on the system drive which is your old drive in this case, so moving the mail folders to the new drive will free up a significant space.
Reply:What you need to do is load your operating system (probably Windows XP) onto the new drive. First you will need to place the new drive into your machine as the primary drive by making sure the jumper is in the correct configuration. Next, hook up the old drive as a slave (change jumper to get this). Most computers have capacity for two drives. After you install the operating system on the new drive, you can access all of the files on the old drive and copy them over or just leave the old drive in place to act as additional storage. I have one computer that I have set up this way, and it works just fine.
Reply:That generally does not work. A lot of programs install needed files in the windows directory and into your registry. You will need to re-install most if not all of your programs.

Five years ago I graduated with top class CGPA as a Chemical Engineer. Then due to twist and turn of my fated destiny , I end up programming hardware software interfacing applications - I always had passion for programming ( Assembly language and C ) - once even attempted to hack campus UNIX server.

Due to some catastrophe - things did not turn out well for my company thus it migrated - now I am jobless , I cant get any IT jobs since I don't have any paper qualification in IT - But I have a B.Eng which I got 5 years a go.

I want to turn my profession back to Engineering career - is this possible because there is a five years gap after graduating. ( I have no working experience in chemical engineer ) - kindly can anyone knowledgeable in this mater advice me on how can I get back to my career.

My Chemical engineering degree , I got it with Honor's and distinctions as a deans list merit. I also have no working experience in that field in my life.

First investigate if there have been any radical new developments in chemical engineering to determine whether your knowledge is sufficiently current. If there has been, you might consider taking some courses to catch up. You may even consider getting a masters degree in the field. However, if this is not feasible or is unnecessary, there is nothing wrong with sending your resume to appropriate companies. You may have to start at a level of a new graduate. Your resume should show your work experience, although it should probably not dwell heavily on too much detail of the past five years. Having a responsible position for the past years is in your favor.

To get connected to the other machines with an authenticated connection to execute the shutdown, do the following:

1) Open an command prompt ("DOS" Window)

2) Type "net use \\%26lt;ip or hostname%26gt;\ipc$ /user:%26lt;administrator%26gt;" and enter the password for that system, when prompted.

3) Then execute "shutdown -l -s -m \\%26lt;ip or hostname%26gt; -t 1" if you're shutting it down and don't care who's on it...

All of this could be put into a script and run. You could execute the net use statements to connect to all of the computers at one time and then run the shutdown script on each afterwards. Of course, you'll have to pass your password to the script, which isn't a secure way to do it unless you do something like set it as a command line variable... Many possibilities there.

Reply:When you state that you are an admin, do you mean that this is a domain, or that you have an admin account set up on each workstation.

Within a domain, you should be able to execute the command as long as the policy settings allow remote execution.

If a workgoup environment, as well as the machine policy allowing the remote execution, you will also need to authenticate against the machine with your local account details on that machine prior to executing the command.

Hey all. Yahoo's window/interface behavior downright baffles me violating so many rules (the use of space is terrible) but there's one thing that bugs the crap outta me:

Why is it that when I open a menu with the alt key and the menu pops down, the escape key closes my window instead of dismissing the menu?

I come from a background of Macintosh's and Mac OS X so I often accidentally press ALT + S or ALT + C/P trying to copy something in Windows. The Escape Key dismisses menus that appear in most apps and the ALT + KEY combo invokes them.

So why does the Escape key close my active Window?

It's driving me insane. I keep booting myself from conferences with my family and friends (which is all I really use Yahoo for).

Is there a way to stop the escape key from closing chat windows?

Me and my friend are looking for a simple command-line C++ source code compiler. All It needs to do is to be able to compile C++ to a .exe using the command line. We would prefer one that does not have any fancy interfaces, just a compiler.

How do I remove AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus program?

The program will not run. Each time I start my PC a window pops up with this message "Could not initialize AVG Anti-Virus Kernel Interface. Application cannot run".

When I try to uninstall the program I get this message: "Installation failure. Error: Initialization of the language file "C\Program Files\Grisoft\Avg Free" failed. General failure". As a result of the installation not being completed I cannot uninstall it but neither can I try to reinstall it, or another anti-virus program. Also, I am not regsitered with AVG to post a help topic on its site.

AVG refuses to help because it is the free edition. I've been told my only option is to install a new hard disk and transfer all my programs to it and use a real anti-virus program.

Is there a practical solution to my dilemma?

Ok. Sorry to hear of your problem but i think i have a solution.

Go to http://free.grisoft.com and get the latest version of AVG downloaded.

When going through the install process set it to 'Repair' install and it if AVG works then you can either leave it or un-install it. Good Luck!

Reply:Install the copy you are trying to remove, and try this:

No antispyware utils at all? ... ok if you do have these installed they may still block a good install.

When the uninstall didn't work correctly, you were left with a registry entry that has the permissions set wrong. You need to correct this so you can continue.

Run REGEDT32 and navigate to the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\...

Right click on the key name in the left window, select Permissions from the options. Give your username and the Administrators full permissions and apply, when it asks if you want to apply the same permissions for subkeys.. say yes.

If the Administrator or your username is missing, under the Groups or user names area....

1. Click the Add button...

2. Type Administrators...

3. Click the Check Names button...

4. Click the Ok button...

5. Highlight Administrators...

6. Place a checkmark in Full Control...

7. Click the Apply button... if it asks to apply it to subkeys... select Yes.

8. If it didn't ask to apply to subkeys, click Advanced and select it there...

Repeat for your username....

Delete key when finished.

To help avoid having this from happening in the future, always download the latest copy of the AVG file from [free.grisoft.com] and save it to your hard drive. Next run that file and select Uninstall from the options it gives you and follow the wizard.
Reply:Yes, there is. Here's the list, from easiest to more involved.

First, try using your System Restore function to restore back before the installation.

If you can't, then REdownload the AVG software - you may have gotten a bad download. Run it but instead of installing,select the "repair" function.

Do NOT use REGEDIT unless you are experienced with it. It's a UNfriendly app, and you can disable your machine if you're not careful.

If this doesn't work - then follow the rest of these instructions.

First use Windows search to find all the files that were installed with AVG. You'll need to search for both "AVG" and "Grisoft". Make sure you have the ability to go into system files and to see hidden files turned on in Windows. (Go into any Windows folder, click on "Tools" up in the header bar, then "Folder Options" then the "view" tab to do this.)

THEN, download and install this registry cleaner, REGVAC. You can get it at: http://www.superwin.com/index.htm

It is superior for stuff like this. You can download it and run it for free.

That should get rid of all the remnants of the attempted install.

(While you're at superwin you can download and install a VERY good file cleaner A1 Click Ultra PC Cleaner. It's free too.) (No, I don't work for them - they just have good products!)

Reply:Uninstall AVG. (try using the uninstall via add/remove programs)

Search for and delete all folders and files that AVG created.Some may be undeletable at this point, as they were lockedduring boot. Reboot, and run a registry cleaner. If you are using a manual one,read the instructions and help carefully first. The automated ones will find a load of useless stuff unrelated to AVG - it's OK to clean that out, too.

Reboot, go to command line and run regedit. In regedit, search for avg*, and delete all references that you find. Just delete the keys that start with avg, don't bother with any other keys that may be associated with those. Most of them will be in the Software section of the registry. Don't delete anything else, no matter how tempting

Reboot. You should now be able to delete all remaining files and folders created by AVG install.

Reboot, and run the registry cleaner again.

You should now have a clean machine, or as clean as the registry cleaner could make it.

Reboot, and reinstall using another download of AVG

How do you create a Window inside a theard in C/C++?

I am having problems creating a window inside a thread. The thread is launched with a funtion from the main application. the LaunchThread() is in a DLL, the DLL also has a function for registering the window using RegisterWindow(), the WndProc and the ThreadProc are also in the DLL.

The thread is created using CreateThread and the ThreadProc calls CreateWindow to create the window, this window will be a user interface for operations that do not interfere with the main application, the window will be launching other threads and such threads will using functions defined in the DLL.

The only connection in between the main application and the DLL is the LaunchThread() function.

That is very odd. I'm afraid I can't help debug without seeing more of the code. Some things you might keep in mind:

- GetLastError refers to the last win32 call, so if you're doing anything between the CreateWindow call and GetLastError you could be clobbering your result.

- If your window procedure doesn't handle certain messages, such as WM_CREATE correctly, Bad Things can happen. You should check to see if it's being entered and that messages are being properly routed by your message loop.

- Make sure the hInstance you pass in is for the correct module. You want the library you're using, not the main executable... see updated references for a blog post that may be relevant to you.

- You may want to eliminate the thread as the cause of the problem... if you create this window in the main application thread (ignoring for a moment that this probably doesn't make sense in the context of your app), does the code work then? If so, does it work in a thread in the main application executable (rather than in your library)?

If I was a professional coder (i.e it was my day job) and I was coding in a language like C++ or Python and was coding things like GUI's, network interfaces, web interfaces etc (quite high level tasks). How many days/hours do you think it would take to write a ten thousand (10000) lines of prof quality code?

It depends on the application, the programming language, and by what you define "quality code" to be.

Some applications never reach the 10,000 lines of code mark and thus the question is moot for them. Also, some programming languages are more verbose than others so you might be writing twice as many lines of code to get something done when compared to other languages. Finally, what defines quality code is difficult to peg down as if you are looking for 100% bug free you are likely to never find it.

If we are talking about sitting a programmer down at the computer and just letting them work without worrying about bugs then a good programmer will likely finish about 10,000 lines of code in a few weeks. However, if we start worrying about making sure the code is bug free then this number will quickly turn into months or even years depending upon the complexity of the code.

I have the choice of pursuing java or c++. What I wanna do is biomedical imaging and signal processing. visualization in 2D and 3D. I don't want to deal with hardware, i just want to develop applications and software that have user interfaces and that can be used for analysis. I will be working with Matlab too. Please help!

First, Java is nowhere near a dying language. That is just completely wrong.

Secondly, when asking yourself about development between Java VS C++ the main thing you need to consider is performance. C++ is still faster than Java, but the speed of applications is more dependent on the skill of the programmer and not so much the underlying language. It is possible to write poorly performing code, no matter what language you are using, and Java is fast enough for most things. Furthermore, you should always use the highest level language that will accomplish your goals given your performance constraints. I'm not advocating Java persay, but it and C# or more suitable for a large number of tasks. In fact, you shouldn't limit yourself to just C++/Java. Take a look at Python, which has some decent graphical libraries.

I wouldn't disregard what the second answerer said, but I would also take it with a grain of salt, as it's not likely that any 1 person's perspetive is indicative of an entire industry.

however, with c++ you can do just about anything with the right knowledge

if yer going to pursue 2d/3d visualization i recommend looking into the openGL API after you learn the c++ basics
Reply:I would also suggest C/C++/C#, but for a different reason. Even though Java is not necessarily a bad programming language, and is not dying, you have other issues that you must consider in medical device. For example, if you certify your application on Acme Java 1.0 and Acme Java 1.1 comes along with optimizations that makes your application run faster, you must re certify your device w/ Acme Java 1.1 even though you changed 0 lines of code because the JVM changed revs.

Having worked in the Medical Field, this drove me absolutely nuts. We had medical devices that were computers, but were running all different levels of Windows and Patches due to the vendors not certifying their applications on MS latest patches and/or OSes. Now you are going to add the additional layer of a run-time interpeter on top of that? Save yourself that headache, you will already have enough when MS patches the OS or releases a new one.

The policy of not allowing patching is one of Siemens, Phillips Medical Systems, and GE. I had systems that were from these vendors that were my responsibility. This problem is due to the fact that when one FDA certifies a system, it gives the vendor a big club to wield on the support side. E-mail me for more specifics if you would like...

Testing is the easiest way to get in, but sounds like you don't want to go that way.

Your experience is in the wrong parts, basically. While C++ is good, you need experience in OpenGL and/or DirectX if you want to work on graphics engine. You can also do interface, software tools, AI, multiplayer code, map scripting, and more. Sounds like you're mainly on the industrial side of programming. How about working for a hardware company that makes games? Handheld games and such? Learn Java (not THAT different from C++) and you can do some BREW programming. Handheld games are hot right now.

I went thru the necessary steps:

1. downloaded file

2. unzipped/ extracted file

3. coppied content of file(s) into appropriate directory (c:wow\interface\add-ons)

4. made sure the directory was correct and software content of game validated appropriate directory

5. made sure there was an add-on folder (one was already pre-made)

*the files that i copied were just files i dumped them into the add-on folder in the interface folder as is. Or should i make a folder in the add-on folder and dump the files in there?

when i log on to world of warcraft i dont see an add - on button by ANY corner of the character selection screen.

All add-ons must appear in a subfolder of the add-on folder. They can not be bare files in that folder. Copy the entire folder.

Then, next time you log on, at the character selection screen, click on the addon button in the lower left (now that you have an add-on, it should be visible). Make sure the new add-on shows, is not grayed out, and is checked. If necessary, check the "Load out of date add-ons" box.

Also, note that in the add-on management screen, you can choose add-ons per character, or all characters. Make sure you are configuring approporiately.

Recently i took it upon myself to learn c++, and i have this great book called C++ How To Program 5th edition (publisher deitel)

My problem is that, when im doing one of the GradeBook projects I keep getting this error (For those of you with the book chap 3, pg. 100)

What im trying to learn is seperating Interface from Implementation.

I made my GradeBook.h, file this has the member function (and my singular data member) prototypes

I then made my GradeBook.cpp, this has my Definitions of the member functions

Lastly i have the drive file or the one that has 'main' in it.

I used the example of the disc, but every time i compile it i get an error

Compiling a C/C++ program works in steps, first you compile the source code to object (obj) files made of symbols and code, then the linker stitches these obj files together to form your program. Some obj files use code from other obj files, they do this by using symbolic links to the code held in the other obj files.

Let's break the error down-

The GradeBook::setCourseName function is required by the main function in mainGradebook1.obj, but the symbol is not found within any other object files.

This is usually caused by 2 things-

1) GradeBook.cpp was not compiled into an object file, therefore the CPP code for GradeBook::setCourseName is not available.

Is GradeBook.cpp part of your project?

Was the obj file created? (search for it)

2) GradeBook.cpp was compiled, but the definition for the setCourseName function looks different to the declaration of the function within GradeBook.h. So when main.obj tries to use setCourseName it's looking for a different symbol (the name and arguments given by GradeBook.h) than the one provided by GradeBook.cpp, so it won't link.

The signatures of the function must match exactly between definition and declaration, even a const qualifier can mess it up. They should probably be like this-

Which is the best Operating system to do C and C++ and networking programming?
i like linux most. it has great tools to observe and examine the traffic, it's very stable and everything's open source. And it has valgrind, which beats any other debugger/memory checker.

also, if you're careful, then porting a linux network application to windows is not a lot of work. and porting linux applications to other unix OSs is usually also quite straight forward.

if you want to write fast servers, then as a language i'd pick C (i don't like C++). however, many servers are nowadays written in java, with tomcat or something similar.

if you find a good networking job - i don't know. i think diversity wins. if you're perfect at writing network software, but not familiar with anything else, that's a big disadvantage. writing good servers is not trivial - you also need a lot of knowledge about protocols, routers, operating systems, performance etc. it's a difficult job.
Reply:Doesn't matter, if you really want to be good at it, I would recommend to start with an operating system you comfortable with. I myself use windows, and linux(through a virtual machine) so I can run both O/S at the same time.

For easy start up on networking I would recommend Java. I personally use c/c++ because that's the language I started with.

The compiler gives a "'AnswersDerivative.SampleMethod()' hides inherited member 'Answers.SampleMethod()'. Use the new keyword if hiding was intended." warning with the following code. But the derived class will implicitly hide the base method, however there is no problem with the method with the alternate signature because it doesn't match anything in the base class

I've had this AVG free edition anti virus program installed on my computer for going on 3 years now.I've newer version 7.5 and in the AVG link it had upgrade to AVG 7.5 Basic interface security for 30 day free trial.So I downloaded it and it expired after 30 days.When dialogue box came up saying "your 7.5 edition has expired,would you like to activate or uninstall"? I clicked on uninstall and it got half way thru and said could not uninstall.I went to add %26amp; remove programs,registy,msconfigurations, and C drive and still was unable to uninstall.I'm trying to install Norton 360 and when I restart my computer it freeze's up in Windows is starting up.Norton has a removal tool provided by Earthlink but been unable to find one from AVG.The Norton 360 runs beautifully until I restart computer.This AVG is hindering my Norton 360 program from functioning properly.Please! Does anyone have any suggestion's on how to remove this AVG Basic Interface 7.5 30 day trial from my hard drive?

i am starting to program in c++ but i dont understand one thing. The code is for making the program work, but how do i make the user interface. I mean in a software you have a buttons, textareas,, etc and all that interacts with the code. But how do i make that?

But i think Visual Basic is another language, you cannot work with c++, isnt it?

Ok, first off, the user interface you can either design yourself with much more advanced programming techniques or you can use a program that works within the API of your operating system such as the visual studio set, the visual studio set has objects pre-created for you so you DON'T have you code them yourself, you simply code what they do.

C++ syntax is NOT compatible with visual basic, although in the visual studio set you can use visual C++.

To answer your last question, yes and no. The same concepts and (probably) most of the same syntax will work on a pc computer as well as a mac computer, the problem that you will run into is there are certain library's of code that are only available on the PC that are simply not on the MAC (or vice versa) so you may be required to code some of your own classes for objects yourself.

Reply:It seems, you want to create GUI in your code, without using any "resources". You can do it using win32 API (though i do not recommend it) or in your C++ code using fox-toolkit.org portable library or Qt, wxWidgets, etc...
Reply:It depends which programming interface you are using. For example, if you are using Microsoft Visual C++ which is similar to Visual Basic for creating your user interfaces.

If you are programming at a command screen and compiling your programs with gcc it would be more difficult to learn how to create these fancy menus and such.

Learning all these programming techniques is fairly complicated and too long for a post here. I would recommend getting a good book on Visual C++ (if that's what your using) since most programming books cover that topic.

Programming on a Mac and PC are different. You can use the same language like C++, C, Java, etc... But you need different compilers, and some specialized programming techniques may be different.
Reply:Standard C++ does not have GUIs like windowing and buttons and stuff; but each framework that ever existed slapping their own framework within their own products. It is not related to Visual Basic; the first programming product that integrated interface as a standard programming construct is Java, before that, all languages link up with sort of a stub containing interface element like in Visual C++.

Visual Basic is unrelated, incompatible, philosophically different, VB is a RAD tool not just a language.

Standard C++ is same across Windows, Mac, Linux; but remember interface programming is not part of standard.

I have some experience programming but haven't really worked with images before. I have no idea where to start. The program has to run on Unix. This is the assignment:

Develop a program for image manipulation using object-oriented programming in C++.

The program does not need to have a graphical user interface or be able to display images: images should be created using a sequence of calls to the class member functions. The results can ultimately be displayed using widely available image viewers.

The project should implement the following classes

Keypresses in C++ (linux)?

I am writing a simple text editor in C++ mainly as practice programming. It currently has a command-line like interface, where commands are entered then return/enter is pressed. For scrolling, that is really slow, so I want to have an interface that accepts just keypresses, but without waiting for you to press return. Something like emacs but without strung-together commands.

How would this be implemented in C++? It must work with Linux, not necessarily with Windows.

kbhit() is part of conio.h. We Linux users have curses.h or ncurses.h. It's a similar input/output library with considerable differences which dates back to the venerable days of mainframes and (occasionally) minicomputers. It's still useful though.

Granted it's C rather than C++ but it still should be useful.

EDIT: I just noticed my recent reinstall of Debian didn't include curses.h. To compile with it I had to type:

"sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev". I got the man pages and everything. If you are using Ubuntu or some other debian derivative you will definitely have to do that, but in my gentoo and Slackware boxes it's installed by default. So check with your system (type "yum search ncurses" in Fedora).

Is an FAQ about Ncurses from the developers. It does mention C++. (LATER:) and I awoke and remembered curses.h is used in the "make menuconfig" command when you recompile the kernel. That means if you're on a Debian-derived system like Ubuntu and you don't have it, it should be downloaded when you download the "build-essential" package. Since make, automake and other useful advanced tools are part of that, if you're on *buntu and you're doing a text editor and you haven't downloaded build-essential, do. My face is beet red.

I need a free C++ compiler for Linux. I've seen Intel's (too large file) and GCC (can't figure out what do, how to download etc). I'm a newbie, so I'd like a nice graphical interface too. I'm using MandrakeLinux 10.0, with KDE. And I'd like it if it was cross-platform, since I may have to work with it in school on Windows PCs. Long list I know, but please do tell me.

you can install GCC from your distribution cds just type the following command as root

urpmi gcc

for c compiler

OR

urpmi g++

for the c++ compiler

this commands works only in mandrake/mandriva.

for the graphical interface you can use kwrite which supports syntax highlighting. just save the file with the .cpp extension then from the command line type:

g++ file.cpp -o executable_name

where file is the name you saved the file with, and executable_name is the name you want for the program. for more details see gcc, g++ manual pages.

Another IDE for Linux is Anjuta (Seach for it). Eclipse is nice too.

And for the cross platform issue you can use MinGW with is the gcc compilers transported to be used for Windows OS. you can also try Dev-C++ which provides the previous compiler with a very nice graphical interface(Sites Below).

This is peer-to-peer networking software. The person who installed it must want to exchange files with a remote computer for either legal reasons or malicious reasons. You need to know who did this and why, or just trash the software and go about your business. You can find it by doing a search of your system for the name of the program. When you find it, simply uninstall it or delete it if it's not on your uninstall list. Hope this has helped.

Reply:Well, the easiest way is to start with the Win32 APIs. Even though it doesn't seem easy at first, it will start to come naturally with use. The URL below has a good downloadable tutorial on Win32 in C. Try it out.

Reply:There is no standard GUI functions in C unlike Java Swing or .NET WinForms. GUI libraries are specific to the platform you are using and most of them are C++ frameworks like MFC and PowerPlant. If you want to learn GUI event driven programming I suggest jumping over to Java or C#/.NET first, get the hang of it, then maybe try doing C++ GUIs.

in straigt visual c++ you could use the MFC libraries for graphical interfaces, or you can use gtk+ etc etc. But for .NET languages, you just need to add a form to the project and set it as the start UI.
Reply:In the express edition, you cannot use the built in GUI creator. You can, however, use it in the Visual Studio 2005 one. (Or any other non express ones). Otherwise you have to learn a graphics library such as GTK or wxWidgets. You can also try straight Win32 GUI code, but that takes some memorization...

Hi, I have been programming with C++ for a while now, and I want to start making some

programs with an interface. What is a good toolkit? I have been using the book 'Beginning

visual C++ 2005' and have finsihed the part up to where they start making GUIs, however,

I would like to make cross platform programs, and I only have the express edition of

Visual Studio 2005 C++, so I can't use the MFCs. Also, I would like a well documented setup,

or at least something there are books on, and a good communuity would be nice. What do the

professionals use? When I am older a want to be a software developer, and I would like one

that wouldn't be laughed at if I was asked what I used

The question stems from a new R/C model plane simulator that I have loaded but can't get it to play. I also get a pop up message that says "USB interface cable. Areo Fly Proffesional is unable to locate the USB interface cable. Please plug the interface cable into a free USB port" (It was plugged in)

What type of graphics card do you have? if you dont know and you are using a PC, follow these instructions:

there are about 17 things listed including the name of your computer. the name of your computer will be similar to XXXX-7C60552B9E (the x's can be any letter) and underneath are folders like "computer" "disk drives" "display adapters" etc. select "display adapters" by clicking the plus sign next to the name (looks like [+]) and double-click on whatever shows up underneath of "display adapters" to find out information about it. Once you get the name and other info about it google it and find out what is wrong or go to atari.com to find out if your R/C sim is malfunctioning. I hope this helps!
Reply:You need to find out what type of graphic card or onboard graphics adapter you have and find out if it supports opengl. It sounds to me like it doesnt. Once you find the graphics adapter, check out the mfg website and see if you have the latest drivers installed.

Well, first we need to figure out the rate heat has been transferred:

To boil water at 100C, 2260 J/g are needed.

q = 150g(2260J/g)/300seconds = 1130 Watts

And now...the part I am having trouble with...you need to find the the convective heat transfer coefficent, h, between water and aluminum boiling water, so we can find the temperature of the aluminum touching the water.

This needs to be given or has to be estimated via a correlation to properly solve this. I have found some decent info here.

for aluminum, wikipedia says k = 237 W/K/m

the same 1130 W are transferred:

1130 W = (237 W/K/m)(0.016m^2)(T2 - 385K)/0.0025m

T2 = 385.745K =112.595 deg C

For the steel plate, the same 1130 Watts are transferred:

steel is primarily iron:

k for iron = 80.4 W/K/m

1130 W = (80.4 W/K/m)(0.016m^2)(T3 - 385.745K)/0.0011m

T3 = 386.711K = 113.591 deg C

Note, depending on what class this question was asked in...I have a feeling you were supposed to assume that the edge of the aluminum pot was 100C...if that would be the case, just subtract all the answer by 11.85 deg C. If this is an engineering class on heat transfer, then you shouldn't ignore the calculation of the pot temperature touching the water (the most ambiguous) step. Also if your textbook has other reference data...you should appropriately substitute those numbers in.

nitpicking: you cannot have a linking problem when compiling code. you can only have linking problems when linking object files and/or libraries.

if you "convert" the exe to a library, then other libraries are ignored (a library usually does not include other libraries, unless you specifically say so). therefore the linker does not complain if other libraries are missing.

only exe files need all dependencies; if a dependency is missing, the linker will complain and stop linking.

if you don't post the error messages, it's hard to offer good help.

Hi, I'm learning JavaScript and I am doing so much better that I thought I would have at this stage and I decided that I want to pick up C++ as well. I downloaded Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition, but the user interface is so confusing and I just want to know if I can make C++ programs run in NotePad, and if I have to save it in a different extension (like .html for JavaScript) or something.

No, if I'm understanding your question correctly.

C++ needs to be compiled and then built into a program, you can't just say double-click on it to run it. If you save it in a file and are hoping to run it like javascript, you are sorely mistaken.

What you can do is this though, create your project in Visual Studio and then edit your files in notepad and then switch back and forth, editing in notepad and then building in Visual Studio.

But I suspect that's not really your problem.

I suspect your real issue is that you don't really understand how to create a project of the type you want or don't understand the idea of a C++ project. I'd say look at the File menu, there should be a "New Project" thing there of some sort with a wizard and just say "command line program" if that's what you're trying to do and it will create the project with just one cpp file with main() in it, then you can edit away on that single file, or again do the notepad edit/visstudio build thing if for some reason you find notepad way better than the visstudio editor (I don't really understand why you would frankly). Then hit F5 to run. That's it for the very basics I guess.

i think your confused though, you cannot compile in notepad. Compile means to take the code you wrote and translate it into machine code so the virtual operating system can understand it.

just save the format as .cpp and press the play button in visual studio or express etc... it will compile it for you.

Alright, so, here's the issue. It's the new age of programming. GUI development should be done with a GUI. :)

Get the Visual Studio demo. It's worth the expense. Or, you could use something like SharpDevelop, which is great if you don't want to pay for VS, and you still want drag-and-drop GUI design. (But I don't know if it does C++ natively.) Take into consideration, even for Windows applications, the Apple Human Interface Guidelines for your design.
Reply:Visual C++ Express edition is Microsoft's IDE. It's pretty nice, and fairly well featured. The help is really good to. If you are looking to build Form (windows) based programs, it is worth looking into. Also, if your aim is building for PC's I'd take a look at C#, there are a lot of similarities in syntax, but C# is a whole lot easier to work in. There is also one called Dev Bloodshed C++, but it's primitive compared to MS's.
Reply:The most important thing is avoid the in record time/in 24 hours books. That was a big mistake on my part. They encourage you to not learn the code, rather cut and paste. If you are serious about learning it, take the painfully slow route. As far as compilers, Bloodshed's Dev-c++ has gotten me through several years of c++. However a few times, I had to resort to visual studio express 2008. Its not that bad. When i started on GUI code, we used MFCs. Those are much easier to use, but I have yet to find a way to support them.

Anyway, you should take a look at the functions that are defined in conio.h. (Look on the Internet if your compiler doesn't have a help file which documents those functions.) You can use those functions to draw your text 'buttons' on the screen and to get user input without having the bothersome cursor on the screen.

If you want mouse input, you'll have to look around the internet for a mouse library written in C. (Usually, the mouse functions provided by a DOS mouse driver are accessed with Assembly language, so that's why you need to find a pre-made mouse library.)

Reply:Back at Rhode Island College Professor McDowell told us that C was not a language you could do much with. If you wanted to do anything with it you needed #include files and libraries. Stdio.h and stdlib.h for example, are useful for much of what we do. And the compiler generally links libc to help them link. When I first started using C if I wanted to use a math.h function (or the double type which is included there) I had to add -lm to the end of my compilation line. Nowadays, just about any compiler will link libm to your program without being told to.

I'm on Linux so I'm somewhat rusty but if you are programming for the console, or the command line then Borland has a neat library called conio. Just include conio.h in your library. Unix/Linux (it was written for Unix but ported to Linux) has something similar called curses or ncurses. For MS-Dos/Windows you can get something similar called pdcurses, or public-domain curses. It's not open source, it's free.

Programming boxes and buttons in Windows can be more complicated. As I remember it, at least check your include files for one called "Windows.h". If you have it then all you have to do is google for Windows Tutorials using Borland. If you don't you probably need another compiler. A free one is available at:

Unless you are running out of IP addresses, I would use a different 24 bit subnet for each location.

If 192.168.4.0/24 192.178.5.0/24 and 192.168.6.0/24 are not already used, then I would use those subnets for the remote offices and continue to use the 192.168.3.0/24 subnet in your office.

You can set aside small subnets for the serial ports so they will not interfere with dynamic routing protocols. You can create subnets such as

192.168.255.0/30

192.168.255.4/30

192.168.255.8/30

192.168.255.12/30

192.168.255.16/30

192.168.255.20/30

192.168.255.24/30

...

This will give you enough subnets for 64 T1 connections.

For each T1 connection, assign the serial port IP addresses to an address in the same subnet. Make sure that the subnet is defined properly on each serial port. There is no default gateway on these subnets, so the ip address other than the network address and the broadcast address are useable (subnet +1 and subnet + 2 are useable for the serial ports. For consistency, always assign the +1 address to the local serial port address and the +2 address to the remote serial port address).

In summary, the ethernet ports on the routers would have IP addresses in the subnets used for the remote offices. The serial ports on the routers would be in the small subnets in the 192.168.255.x/30 number ranges.
Reply:Man, that's a large/tough question. If you dont know the answer, Yahoo Answers is not the place to start looking.

I mean, you start getting into VLSM and CIDR and all kinds of stuff. It's way too complicated for anyone to explain here.

Essentially, use VLSM to sbunet the 192.168.3.0/24 network into three networks. If you desire to have all three networks to have the same amount of hosts, the first network number would be would be 192.168.3.0/26. The next network number would be 192.168.3.64/26. The next would be 192.168.3.128/26. The last would be 192.168.3.192/26. This creates 4 networks and you only need three. You can create three through more extensive planning, but this is all I can come up with with the info you provided. You would use one of the host addresses within the networks to assign to each routers ethernet interface. I would suggest 192.168.3.1/26, 192.168.3.65/26 and 192.168.3.129/26. The you have to get into route summarization. I assume you know that you are dealing with a private address and you need to have a public address to translate to. You would need three public address to assign to your serial ports. Then you would probably use PAT to translate the public addresses to you private ones.

As for your routing protocols, it's up to you and the type of network and environment you have set up.

Both subjects, IP addressing and routing protocols, are way too complicated to go into any depth.

In all reality, if you have to ask this question, you have no business trying to attempt this

I am working on software requirements for changes in a user interface (GUI) screen. I would like to find, if possible, a list that gives all the possible parameters for the various objects that will appear on the screen, such as text boxes, dialog boxes, etc. The program is coded in Visual C++ if it mattters.

I have included a link to the MSDN pages which lists several of the on screen objects which control the elements of a GUI. From this screen you will see a list of class names. Click one and it gives you the overview, but towards the bottom you will see another link which reads "Class members". By clicking this, you will see all the methods (they call them operations) and attributes. Again, clicking one of these will tell you the functions signature which lists the parameters of the object.

I believe a straight list of object parameter names and types does not exist because it would be no good to any programmer. Programmers deal with the objects and will look up their signature as needed. That and parameter number and types can change with different signatures.

Why interfaces are needed in java or C# ?
There are many reasons for keeping the interface and definitions separate. The two most important that come to mind are organization and support for circular dependencies.

The interface is the bare minimum needed to explain what a function or class will do. It's the lease amount of code you can write for a full declaration of functionallity and useability. For this reason, it's (more) clear for a user of your function or class to understand how the object works. The user shouldn't have to look through all of your implementations to understand what the object does. So, providing the interface separate, is a more organized approach.

Sometimes (although, it's considered bad programming practice) you need to have two or more objects which will require instances or use of the others and vice verca. For example: Objects A and B are defined as A is an object which contains one B. B is an object which contains one A. Without an interface signature before the definition, it is very difficult to implement this relationship.

That was a little tricky, but because it says "specialized equipment", router would have been the answer. You can use a crossover cable to make a physical connection to another computer which is a network, in which case I would think d could be the right answer. But, a nic isn't really specialized equipment. It is more of a component.

Hello,

I got this pop up, mentioned above, from avginet. I tried to reinstall the program to repair it and now I have two Icons on my desktop, one gives me the pop up I mentioned above :

(AVG anti virus kernel interface, application cannot run)

and the other is a pop up from AVG anti-virus system, it tells me this:

(@Avg_ DetectUnFinishUpdate) with the option @Btn_Yes or @Btn_no, When I click yes it gives me this pop up:

@Avg_UpdateInterface with @Btn_OK ,

I click the ok button thinking it will update the interface but nothing happens.

I tried to delete the program to reinstall it but it tells me this:

Installer initialization failed due to following error:

Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free" failed.

General failure.

I hope I have explained this problem with out complicating it. Anyway if anyone can help me with this I would sure appreciate it.

LOL, AVG is strange, though it's a damn good program. I had the same problem. I went to their website and downloaded the newest version AVG 7.5. Click on the UPGRADE link. If the Upgrade doesn't fix your problem then download the full version. There is another way that might help but try those two first, if they fail email or IM me. I will help you go through your registgry and delete the files.

I have an Olympus Camedia C series digital camera, which interfaced fine with my old processor.

Recently I had the motherboard upgraded with a new Athelon 4200 processor.

Now the computer does not recognize the camera as a peripheral hardware item.

I called Olympus customer support and could not believe my ears! They told me that the 4200 processor won't interface with any Olympus (or any other brand of) digital camera because the camera manufacturer's have not made any cameras that "go with" the 4200 processor technology, and that it would be 1 to 2 years before the camera manufacturers came out with new cameras that would interface with this new processor.

It seems surreal to me that this could be true.

Can anyone out there verify it? Or dispute it with good reason %26amp; recommendation?

I have this old crusty Fujitsu Lifebook C with a physically damaged hard drive. The hard drive in the laptop now is a discontinued item, and is proving rather difficult to find (part # MHM2200AT). I can, however, find numerous other hard drives that fit the 2.5" form (for instance, the MHV2040AT), but they use different interfaces. The old hard drive used Ultra ATA/66, and the newer drives use ATA 7. Would I be able to mount a hard drive using the ATA 7 interface in a laptop whose previous hard drive was Ultra ATA/66?

I'm pretty sure it'll work fine, but I'd rather get a second opinion before I shell out the $$, know what I mean? :)

I have never tried this in a laptop, but I have installed a newer IDE (ATA133) in an older computer which originally used an ATA66 harddrive. These newer ATA drives are backward compatible to the older ATA interface and will run at the slower transfer speed of your harddrive controller. Just be sure not to get a SATA drive - it won't work.

you can use the Intel 8-bit assembly language, or C. You can probably find a free compiler for the assembly easily (if not, I think I still have it). For C, the compiler I recommend is Keil (www.keil.com). After that you need to load the software into the micro, or external RAM. Some support serial download through the serial port, but if not, you need a "burner" to load it.

I have a lot of legacy C code for image processing which needs to be as fast as possible. I have interfaced to it using C++ .NET and "extern C". Would it be worth trying to port it to C#? What are the performance tradeoffs?

I think the performance will only degrade from porting the code. Image processing usually requires manipulation with memory blocks, pixel color component values etc. This can be easily done in C, but is too tricky for "safe" C#. Those "tricks" will require additional operations and definitely will eat a substantional share of performance.

Of couse, it is always possible to rewrite code "in C# way", but it will not be "porting" but "wrighting from scratch".

I have found that the Intel compiler does the best job of optimizing image processing code --- even better than hand-coded assembly.
Reply:write it in assembly for speed... otherwise absolutely port it. Well designed software will haul hiney on today's personal computers. If you are having lag problems in the render check to see if you can stream line your code ( i know obvious, but I had to say it ). Using "volitale" memory is only (relatively ) safe for "quick" application "popups". I wouldn't base any long term render on it. But go ahead and try it, maybe you'll design the next, smaller, faster render engine. Worse case is you'll learn why we don't use volitale mem.

Reply:Using the parallel port would be much easier, since you just send a value to the port and the bits stay the same until you send another value.

The serial port however works differently.

The parallel port has 8 output bits, so you could be able to control 8 different appliances.

I have done this in the past, I used only 4 of the 8 bits, and used optocouplers to isolate the parallel port's output from the relays. The parallel port's output isn't enough to turn on a relay, and the isolation prevents you damaging the port.

The AVR series of chip are made by Atmel corporation. They vary from small form factor, small memory devices like the 2313 (with space for 2,000 instructions) up through the "Mega128" with 128K of memory and several specialized processing units built in. My impression is that the methods I have used will be applicable to any microprocessor in the series, but I could be wrong. I have tested the setup with the "STK-500" starter kit from Atmel, and it worked just fine.

So you only need a starter kit from Atmel or any other brand for example....

And you have to install the driver to make it work with high speed.

I am learning C++ do construct a program that manipulates data. C++ console programming I find is dead easy, but manipluating forms is so much more difficult than VB... should I use VB to manipulate the interface with C++ running all the operations in the background, or would that be just a dumb idea...?

Can VB work with C++?
You can write DLL in C/C++ and call your C/C++ functions from VB code.

In other words how do I change from C++, to C# in the Visual Studio 2005 suite of languages? Right now I'm in C++ but I'd like to go to other languages in the software package for program development. What do I need to do?

How do I know what kind of power supply for my P.C. I would need?
Get at least a 550 watt power supply the larger the better. That way if you add more peripherial devices you will have enough power to handle the load.

Reply:Since you are building a gaming PC, you are likely to upgrade components as better stuff becomes available. In general, more powerful components, especially video cards, require more power. Since you have an ATX mobo, you need an ATX power supply. Go with the biggest ATX power supply you can afford now, and you won't have to replace it as you upgrade your machine in the future. I would use a 700 watt power supply as a minimum.
