Is there a big performance difference between a Radeon x1650XT AGP interface and one with a PCI Express?

i've an x1650 pro with AGP bus interface, and am planning to change my mobo to get a dual core processor. since i'm changing boards, why not get one with the more advanced PCI-e slot? my concern is the price. if i wont get much of a performance gain with a PCIe card than an AGP one, i'd stay with the AGP board w/c is cheaper.

the upgrade from AGP to PCI-e can be of different kind;

if one upgrades from an AGP4x or even AGP2/1x to a PCI-e, yes, the performance gain will be impressive, indeed;

with a AGP8x, like you most likely have, w/ a X1650, the performance improvement might not be so big.

one of the reason being that even with an AGP8x, the other components of the PC (CPU of course, but also hard disk, memory and PSU (!)) can seriously limit the performance of your video system;

if you are ready to spend the money to get

- a reasonably fast CPU

- a SATA disk

- a PSU of at least 480W

- 1, preferably even two GB of RAM

then, yes, add a PCI-e card to the pack.

if, on the other hand, your budget is limited (continue to use your trusted ATA disk, the 512MB of RAM aso.) then you may want to stick to the AGP card for now and put that money on the better CPU or more RAM.

good luck w/ your upgrade!
Reply:PCI-E is much faster than AGP, but one problem, it needs more power, its not a big problem
